Phonics
Building Strong Foundations for Reading and Writing
At The Learning Patch, we believe phonics should be engaging, meaningful and confidence-building.
Our phonics sessions for children aged 4–11 are designed to develop secure foundations in reading, spelling and communication through practical, hands-on and play-based learning experiences.
We understand that children learn best when they feel relaxed, supported and actively involved in their learning. That’s why our approach moves beyond flashcards and worksheets to create phonics experiences that are dynamic, interactive and fun.
A Play-Based Approach to Phonics
Children explore sounds, words and language through a wide range of engaging activities including:
- Outdoor phonics hunts
- Sensory and tuff tray invitations
- Storytelling and role play
- Natural resources and small world play
- Games and practical challenges
- Oral language and communication activities
From pinecone sound matching and potion-making challenges to interactive storytelling and movement-based games, learning is designed to feel exciting and purposeful.
Supporting Every Child’s Journey
Sessions are carefully tailored to meet each child’s individual stage of phonics development.
Support may include:
- Letter and sound recognition
- Blending and segmenting
- Early reading skills
- Tricky words and spelling patterns
- Fluency and confidence
- Applying phonics within reading and writing
For older children who may need additional support or confidence rebuilding, sessions provide gentle, personalised teaching within a calm and nurturing environment.
Confidence Through Connection
At The Learning Patch, we know that confidence is at the heart of successful learning.
Our small group and 1:1 phonics sessions allow children to feel safe, encouraged and celebrated as they progress at their own pace.
Because phonics should open the door to a lifelong love of reading.
