Growing Confident and Capable Readers

At The Learning Patch, we believe reading should feel joyful, meaningful and confidence-building.

Our reading sessions for children aged 4-11 are designed to nurture a love of books and language whilst developing the key skills children need to become fluent, confident readers.

We understand that every child’s reading journey is different. Some children may need gentle encouragement and secure foundations, whilst others may be ready for deeper comprehension, fluency and challenge. Sessions are carefully tailored to meet each child’s individual needs and stage of development.

A Nurturing, Play-Based Approach

Reading development is woven through engaging, hands-on experiences that make literacy meaningful and enjoyable.

Sessions may include:

  • Storytelling and book exploration
  • Phonics and decoding skills
  • Reading fluency and expression
  • Comprehension and vocabulary development
  • Role play and oral language activities
  • Sensory and outdoor literacy experiences

Children are encouraged to talk, question, predict and connect with stories in ways that build both understanding and confidence.

Building Foundations Through Phonics

For younger learners and emerging readers, we support early reading development through practical, play-based phonics experiences linked closely to the EYFS and KS1 curriculum.

From outdoor phonics hunts and storytelling invitations to natural tuff trays and hands-on games, children develop reading skills through exploration, movement and meaningful play.

More Than Just Reading Words

At The Learning Patch, we want children to become readers who:

  • Enjoy books
  • Feel confident reading aloud
  • Understand and discuss what they read
  • Build vocabulary and communication skills
  • Develop curiosity and imagination

Our calm indoor studio and nature-inspired outdoor environment help children feel relaxed, engaged and ready to learn.

Because reading opens the door to confidence, imagination and lifelong learning
